BYD Launches 6th Car-Carrying Vessel!
Share
BYD sales continue to soar. Its passenger vehicle sales were up 58% in the first quarter, while its electric commercial truck sales were up 1169%. Regarding full electric cars, BYD has now solidly shot past Tesla as the global leader. And the company has been releasing new model after new model.
In 2013, BYD launched its own shipping vessel in order to make it easier and cheaper to ship thousands of customer vehicles at a time to ports around the world.
In recent days, a couple of commenters have noted that BYD just launched its 6th shipping vessel. One of those readers, “trackdaze,” provided a link to a story on this. Reportedly, BYD took delivery on Wednesday, April 2, and this 6th roll-on/roll-off BYD shipping vessel is named “Xi’an.” That’s the name of one of BYD’s production bases, which is what previous ships have been getting named after as well. Cute. BYD’s Xi’an factory produces 1 million vehicles a year.
That’s not the only BYD ship news, though. Another BYD shipping vessel, its largest, is about to hit the waves for its first deliveries. “In addition, what attracts more attention is that the world’s largest car RoRo ship “Shenzhen” is about to embark on its maiden voyage. The total length of”Shenzhen” is 219.9 meters long and the capacity of it is 9,200 vehicles. It adopts liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel power, self-developed box battery pack and shaft generator and other green technologies. It is one of the most environmentally friendly RoRo ships in the world.”
By 2026, BYD plans to have 8 of these RoRo ships in operation, and the capability of shipping about 1 million vehicles per year. Its first 6 ships are as follows:
- BYD EXPLORER NO.1
- BYD CHANGZHOU
- BYD HEFEI
- BYD CHANGSHA
- BYD SHENZHEN
- BYD XI’AN
This is just one of countless ways BYD has been working to cut costs and get a leg up on the competition.
So far, BYD’s shipping vessels have been mostly used to ship vehicles to Europe. However, it’s suspected they will start getting used more for big markets in Southeast Asia that BYD has been targeting more recently. “Thailand and Malaysia are BYD’s core markets in Southeast Asia. In 2024, BYD’s share of the new energy vehicle market in Thailand exceeded 30%, while the sales of ATTO 3 model in Malaysia surged by more than 150% year-on-year.
BYD is becoming a global behemoth. Of course, one notable market is keeping it out (even though BYD does produce and sell electric buses there), but there’s plenty of opportunity for vehicle electrification and sales elsewhere.
Overall, BYD’s mantra (aside from massive cleantech growth) seems to be: efficiency, efficiency, efficiency; cut costs, cut costs, cut costs; innovate, innovate, innovate. It doesn’t seem, at the moment, that anyone can truly compete with it.
